A casualty has a burn after a vehicle fire. How should you treat it?
- Cool it with plenty of clean, cool water for at least 20 minutesCorrect
- Rub cream or butter into the burn
- Cover it tightly with a wool blanket
- Burst any blisters to release the fluid
Why?
Annex 7 of The Highway Code says to cool a burn for at least 20 minutes with plenty of clean, cool water. Cooling limits the damage and eases the pain. You should not use creams or burst blisters, as these can make the injury worse or cause infection.
