Incidents, accidents and emergencies

You are waiting for the ambulance with a conscious but injured casualty. How should you care for them?

  • Give them a hot drink and some food
  • Keep them warm, comfortable and reassured, but give nothing to eat or drink
    Correct
  • Encourage them to walk about to stay alert
  • Leave them alone so they can rest quietly

Why?

Annex 7 of The Highway Code says you should keep an injured casualty warm and comfortable and reassure them calmly, but do not give them anything to eat or drink. Staying with them and keeping them calm helps reduce the effects of shock.
