A casualty's arm is bleeding badly but is not broken. As well as pressing on the wound, what else helps?
- Lowering the arm below the heart
- Shaking the arm to slow the blood
- Wrapping the arm very tightly at the shoulder
- Raising the arm above the level of the heartCorrect
Why?
Annex 7 of The Highway Code says that if a limb is bleeding but not broken, raising it above the level of the heart reduces the flow of blood to the wound. Combine this with firm pressure on the wound to control the bleeding.
