A casualty is bleeding heavily from a wound that has nothing stuck in it. What should you do?
- Give them plenty of water to drink
- Apply firm pressure over the woundCorrect
- Wait for the bleeding to stop on its own
- Lower the injured part below the body
Why?
Annex 7 of The Highway Code says that to control serious bleeding you should apply firm pressure over the wound, using a clean pad if you have one. Steady pressure helps the blood to clot and slows the loss of blood until the ambulance arrives.
