Incidents, accidents and emergencies

You are helping a casualty with a burn. Some clothing is stuck to the burnt skin. What should you do?

  • Peel the clothing off quickly
  • Soak the clothing in oil, then pull it off
  • Leave anything that is stuck to the burn in place
    Correct
  • Cut away the burnt skin around it

Why?

Annex 7 of The Highway Code says you should not try to remove anything that is sticking to a burn. Pulling it away tears the damaged skin and worsens the injury. Keep cooling the burn with water instead, and leave the stuck material for the medical team.
