A casualty is unconscious and not breathing, so you start chest compressions. How should you press?
- Very gently, about once every five seconds
- Only on the left side of the chest
- As lightly as possible to avoid causing harm
- Down about 5 to 6 cm in the centre of the chest, roughly twice a secondCorrect
Why?
Annex 7 of The Highway Code describes chest compressions as part of the 'C' (Circulation) step. Place two hands in the centre of the chest and press down firmly about 5 to 6 centimetres at a rate of roughly twice a second. Firm, fast compressions keep blood moving to the brain.
