A casualty is lying still after a crash. How should you check whether they respond?
- Splash cold water on their face
- Gently shake their shoulders and ask loudly if they are all rightCorrect
- Lift them up into a sitting position
- Give them something to eat
Why?
The 'R' in DR ABC stands for Response. Annex 7 of The Highway Code says to check for a response by gently shaking the casualty's shoulders and asking loudly if they are all right. This tells you whether they are conscious before you go on to check their airway and breathing.
