Incidents, accidents and emergencies
An unconscious casualty is not breathing well. How should you open their airway?
- Press firmly on their chest
- Put a folded coat under their head
- Place your fingers under their chin and lift it forwardCorrect
- Turn their head sharply to one side
Why?
The 'A' in DR ABC stands for Airway. Annex 7 of The Highway Code says that to open an unconscious casualty's airway you place your fingers under their chin and lift it forward. This stops the tongue from blocking the throat so air can reach the lungs.
