Incidents, accidents and emergencies
Your car breaks down on the hard shoulder of a motorway and you need to call for help. What should you use?
- Your mobile phone, since it's fastest
- The emergency roadside telephone in preference to a mobile phoneCorrect
- Your car horn to attract a passing driver
- Wait by the roadside until a police car happens to pass
Why?
Rule 275 of The Highway Code says you should use an emergency roadside telephone in preference to a mobile phone — it connects you directly to an operator and pinpoints your exact location. Face the oncoming traffic while you speak, and mention if you're a vulnerable motorist.
