Incidents, accidents and emergencies

A motorcyclist has been knocked off their bike and is lying injured in the road. What should you do?

  • Take off their helmet at once so they can breathe
  • Move them to the pavement as quickly as you can
  • Leave the helmet on unless it is essential to remove it
    Correct
  • Sit them up and give them a warm drink

Why?

Moving an injured person the wrong way can make their injuries worse. Annex 7 of The Highway Code says you should not remove a motorcyclist's helmet unless it is essential, and you should not move an injured person unless they are in danger. Check for Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing and Circulation (DR ABC) and call the emergency services.
