Incidents, accidents and emergencies

Your car stalls and will not restart while you are on a railway level crossing. What should you do first?

  • Stay in the car and keep trying to start the engine
  • Push the car forward onto the middle of the crossing
  • Get everyone out and clear of the crossing straight away
    Correct
  • Wait in the car for the barriers to lift

Why?

Rule 299 of The Highway Code says that if your vehicle breaks down on a level crossing you must get everyone out and clear of the crossing at once. Then use the railway telephone, if there is one, to tell the signal operator. Only move the car if there is time before a train comes.
