Part of your load falls off onto a motorway carriageway. What should you do?

Reverse back along the hard shoulder to pick it up
Run across the lanes quickly to grab it
Do nothing at all and just drive on
Stop in a safe place and call the emergency services on 999

Why?

Rule 280 of The Highway Code says that if anything falls from your vehicle onto a motorway you must not try to remove it yourself. Stop in a place of relative safety, such as an emergency area or the hard shoulder, and call the emergency services on 999 so they can deal with it.
