Incidents, accidents and emergencies

Part of your load falls off onto a motorway carriageway. What should you do?

  • Reverse back along the hard shoulder to pick it up
  • Run across the lanes quickly to grab it
  • Do nothing at all and just drive on
  • Stop in a safe place and call the emergency services on 999
    Correct

Why?

Rule 280 of The Highway Code says that if anything falls from your vehicle onto a motorway you must not try to remove it yourself. Stop in a place of relative safety, such as an emergency area or the hard shoulder, and call the emergency services on 999 so they can deal with it.
