Incidents, accidents and emergencies

You are stuck in queuing traffic that has not moved for several minutes. What is the sensible thing to do?

  • Keep revving the engine so it does not stall
  • Switch off the engine to cut fumes and save fuel
    Correct
  • Sound your horn to speed things up
  • Get out and leave your car in the queue

Why?

Rule 123 of The Highway Code says you should not leave a vehicle's engine running unnecessarily while it is stationary. If you are likely to be held up for more than a couple of minutes, switching off reduces fumes and noise and saves fuel. Only do this when it is safe.
