Motorway rules

You have driven past your exit on the motorway. What is the correct thing to do?

  • Stop on the hard shoulder and wait for help
  • Make a U-turn when the road is clear
  • Continue to the next exit and leave there
    Correct
  • Reverse carefully back to the slip road

Why?

There is no safe way to go back on a motorway. Rule 263 of The Highway Code says you must not reverse, turn round, or drive against the traffic. If you miss your exit, keep going to the next junction and come back on the other carriageway.
