Motorway rules

You are in the middle lane and want to leave the motorway at a junction ahead. How should you plan your lane changes?

  • Look well ahead for the exit signs and move into the left lane early
    Correct
  • Wait until the last moment, then cut across to the exit
  • Move to the right lane first to get a better view
  • Straddle two lanes so you can decide later

Why?

Late, sudden lane changes near a junction surprise other drivers. Rule 266 of The Highway Code says that when you approach a junction you should look well ahead for the signs, get into the correct lane in good time, and not move across lanes at the last moment.
