Motorway rules

You want to make a phone call while driving on the motorway. What should you do?

  • Stop on the hard shoulder and make the call
  • Slow down in the left lane and call hands-free held to your ear
  • Pull onto the central reservation
  • Wait until you leave at a service area or exit, then stop and call
    Correct

Why?

You must not stop on a motorway just to use a phone. Rule 271 of The Highway Code says you must not stop on the carriageway, hard shoulder, slip road or emergency area except in a real emergency. Wait until you can stop safely at a service area or leave the motorway.
