Motorway rules

On a long motorway journey, how often does the Highway Code recommend taking a break to stay alert?

  • At least a 15-minute break after every two hours of driving
    Correct
  • A 5-minute break every four hours
  • Only when you feel very tired
  • A break only at the end of the journey

Why?

Tiredness makes crashes far more likely. Rule 91 of The Highway Code says to plan your journey to include enough breaks — a minimum break of at least 15 minutes after every two hours of driving. Motorway service areas are there for exactly this.
