Part of your load falls from your car onto the motorway. What should you do?

Stop in the running lane and pick it up quickly
Reverse to reach it on the hard shoulder
Do not try to retrieve it yourself; stop in a safe place and phone for help
Correct
Run across the lanes to move it aside

Why?

The traffic is far too fast to walk among safely. Rule 279 of The Highway Code says you must not try to remove anything from the carriageway yourself; stop at an emergency telephone or a place of relative safety and phone for help so it can be cleared.
