Motorway rules
Traffic ahead on the motorway suddenly slows to a stop. When may you briefly use your hazard warning lights?
- To warn following drivers that you are turning off
- Any time you want other drivers to give way
- To thank a driver who let you merge
- To warn the drivers behind you of the queue or obstruction aheadCorrect
Why?
Normally you must not use hazard lights while moving. Rule 116 of The Highway Code allows one exception: on a motorway or unrestricted dual carriageway you may switch them on briefly to warn drivers behind of a hazard or queue ahead. Use them only long enough to be seen.
