Motorway rules

A faster vehicle is overtaking you on the motorway. What should you do?

  • Speed up so it cannot get past
  • Keep a steady speed and let it complete the overtake
    Correct
  • Brake hard to let it in front
  • Move to the right to block it

Why?

Making an overtake harder is dangerous at motorway speeds. Rule 168 of The Highway Code says that if another vehicle is overtaking you, you should not speed up, and should keep a steady course and speed, easing off if necessary so it can pass and pull in safely.
