Motorway rules
You are joining a motorway from the slip road. How should you join the traffic?
- Stop at the end of the slip road and wait for a gap
- Expect motorway traffic to move over and let you in
- Cross straight to the right-hand lane as quickly as you can
- Give priority to traffic already on the motorway and match your speed to join a safe gapCorrect
Why?
The slip road lets you build up speed so you can merge smoothly. Rule 259 of The Highway Code says you should give priority to traffic already on the motorway, adjust your speed to match it, and join a safe gap in the left-hand lane. Do not force your way in or stop unless the traffic is queuing.
