Motorway rules

You have just overtaken slower vehicles in the middle lane of a motorway. What should you do next?

  • Stay in the middle lane in case you need to overtake again
  • Move to the right-hand lane to keep clear
  • Return to the left-hand lane when it is safe to do so
    Correct
  • Slow down and let others overtake you

Why?

The middle and right lanes are only for overtaking. Rule 264 of The Highway Code says that after overtaking you should return to the left-hand lane once you can do so safely. Staying out in a lane you no longer need (lane hogging) blocks other traffic.
