Before overtaking on a motorway, why is it so important to check your mirrors and blind spot carefully?

Why?
On a motorway other vehicles travel fast, so one behind can close the gap in seconds. Rule 267 of The Highway Code says that before overtaking you should check your mirrors, take time to judge the speeds of other vehicles, and check your blind spot before moving out.
