Motorway rules
You have just left a motorway and are on the slip road. Why should you check your speedometer?
- Because the speed limit on slip roads is always 70 mph
- Because your brakes will have overheated
- Because after fast motorway driving your speed may feel slower than it really isCorrect
- Because the speedometer stops working at high speed
Why?
After a long time at motorway speeds your sense of speed adjusts, so 50 mph can feel like a crawl. Rule 274 of The Highway Code warns that you may be going faster than you think when you leave, so check your speedometer and slow right down, especially for a sharp bend or roundabout.
