Motorway rules
You are overtaking a high-sided lorry on an exposed stretch of motorway in strong winds. What should you expect?
- Your car will be pushed towards the lorry and grip better
- The wind has no effect on a car
- You should switch off your lights to save power
- A sudden gust as you pass, which can blow your car off courseCorrect
Why?
Open motorways, bridges and gaps in hedges let crosswinds hit you hard. Rule 232 of The Highway Code warns that high-sided vehicles are worst affected, but gusts can also blow a car, motorcyclist or cyclist off course, so hold the wheel firmly and allow extra room.
