Motorway rules
You start to feel sleepy on a long motorway journey. What is the best thing to do?
- Leave at the next service area or exit and take a proper breakCorrect
- Open the window and speed up to get home sooner
- Stop on the hard shoulder for a short sleep
- Turn the radio up loud and carry on
Why?
Driving tired is very dangerous and you can fall asleep without warning. Rule 262 of The Highway Code says to stop and rest if you feel drowsy, and rule 91 advises planning breaks and finding a safe place to stop — never the hard shoulder, which is only for emergencies.
