Motorway rules

You are approaching roadworks on a motorway where a lower speed limit is signed. What must you do?

  • Keep to the normal 70 mph limit until you reach the cones
  • Slow down and keep to the lower speed limit shown through the roadworks
    Correct
  • Speed up to clear the roadworks quickly
  • Move onto the hard shoulder to avoid the narrow lanes

Why?

Roadworks bring narrower lanes, workers and changed layouts. Rule 289 of The Highway Code says you should obey the reduced speed limits at motorway roadworks and keep a safe distance, because there is less room and often no hard shoulder to stop on.
