Motorway rules

You are driving through a contraflow system at motorway roadworks. What is the main risk to be aware of?

  • The road surface is always icy in a contraflow
  • You can drive faster because the lanes are wider
  • You are in a narrow lane close to oncoming traffic with no permanent barrier
    Correct
  • Your headlights must be switched off

Why?

In a contraflow, traffic is switched onto the other carriageway, so lanes are narrow and often only cones or studs separate you from oncoming vehicles. Rule 290 of The Highway Code says to keep to the lower speed limit, stay in your lane, and keep a good distance from the vehicle in front.
