Motorway rules
In good, dry conditions on a motorway, what is the smallest gap you should leave between you and the vehicle in front?
- A gap of at least two secondsCorrect
- About one car length
- Half a second
- You do not need a gap at motorway speed
Why?
At speed you need time to react and stop. Rule 260 of The Highway Code says to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front — at least a two-second gap in good conditions. Leave a bigger gap in rain, fog or ice, when stopping distances grow (rule 126).
