Motorway rules

Traffic on the motorway has slowed to a crawl and keeps stopping and starting. How should you position your car?

  • Right up against the car in front so no one pushes in
  • In two lanes at once to keep your options open
  • On the hard shoulder to skip the queue
  • Leaving a gap to the car in front so you can move away smoothly and safely
    Correct

Why?

Even in slow, queuing traffic you should not close right up to the vehicle ahead. Rule 260 of The Highway Code says to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front. A gap lets you move off smoothly and gives you room if the vehicle in front rolls back or breaks down.
