Motorway rules

You are on a smart motorway with no hard shoulder and your car develops a fault. Where should you try to stop?

  • In the left-hand running lane with your hazard lights on
  • In an emergency refuge area if you can reach one safely
    Correct
  • On the central reservation
  • Across two lanes so you are easy to see

Why?

Smart motorways often use the former hard shoulder as a running lane, so there is no continuous place to stop. Rule 270 of The Highway Code says you should try to reach an emergency area (marked with blue SOS signs) or the next exit, then use the free SOS phone to get help.
