Motorway rules
The lane to your right is moving slowly. Are you allowed to overtake on the left to get past it?
- Yes, as long as you signal first
- No, you must not overtake on the left except in slow queuesCorrect
- Yes, the left lane is always the faster one
- Only at night when traffic is light
Why?
Passing on the left (undertaking) is dangerous because drivers do not expect it. Rule 268 of The Highway Code says you must not overtake on the left. The only exception is congested traffic moving in queues, where your lane may move faster than the one on your right.
