Motorway rules
On a smart motorway, a red X is shown above a lane on the overhead signs. What must you do?
- Slow down but keep using the lane carefully
- Move out of that lane and do not drive in itCorrect
- Treat it as a normal open lane
- Use the lane only if you are overtaking
Why?
On a smart motorway the overhead gantry signs manage the lanes. A red X means the lane is closed, often because of a broken-down vehicle or an incident ahead. Rule 258 of The Highway Code says you must not drive in a lane closed by a red X — move into an open lane in good time.
