Motorway rules

Your car breaks down on the motorway and you have a dog in the back. What should you do with the animal?

  • Let it run on the hard shoulder to keep it calm
  • Tie it to the safety barrier
  • Walk it along the carriageway on a lead
  • Keep it in the vehicle, letting it out only if you must and keeping it under control on the verge
    Correct

Why?

A loose animal on a motorway is extremely dangerous. Rule 278 of The Highway Code says you should keep animals in the vehicle; only in an emergency should you let one out, and then keep it under proper control on the verge, well away from the traffic.
