Motorway rules
You have stopped on the hard shoulder after a breakdown. How do you find the nearest emergency telephone?
- Walk across the carriageway to the other side
- Follow the arrows on the posts at the back of the hard shoulderCorrect
- Wait in your car until one appears
- Walk in whichever direction is downhill
Why?
Emergency telephones are about a mile apart. Rule 275 of The Highway Code says arrows on the posts at the back of the hard shoulder point to the nearest one. It is free and connects straight to an operator, who can also tell where you are.
