Motorway rules

You have fixed a problem on the hard shoulder and want to rejoin the motorway. How should you do it?

  • Build up speed on the hard shoulder, then join a safe gap in the traffic
    Correct
  • Pull straight out into the left lane at low speed
  • Wait for another driver to flash you out
  • Reverse back to the start of the hard shoulder first

Why?

You must match the speed of fast traffic before you pull out. Rule 276 of The Highway Code says to build up speed on the hard shoulder and move into a safe gap in the left-hand lane. Watch out for other vehicles that may also be stopped on the hard shoulder.
