Motorway rules
You have broken down on the motorway and phone for help. Why should you read the numbers and letters on the nearby marker posts?
- They tell you the speed limit
- They show how far it is to the next service area
- They help the emergency services find exactly where you areCorrect

Why?
The emergency services need to know your exact location. Rule 275 of The Highway Code says the marker posts and driver location signs along the edge of the road carry a code; quote these numbers and letters so help can find you quickly, especially if you call from a mobile phone.
