Motorway rules

The signals on a motorway gantry are showing flashing amber lights, but no speed limit is displayed. What do they mean?

  • The motorway ahead is closed to all traffic
  • There is a hazard ahead, so slow down and be ready for danger
    Correct
  • You may speed up because the road is clear
  • You must leave at the next exit

Why?

Flashing amber signals warn of a hazard you may not yet be able to see. Rule 257 of The Highway Code says they warn of danger ahead, such as an incident, fog or a spillage, so slow down and look out for the danger until you pass a signal that is not flashing.
