Motorway rules

Flashing amber signals on the motorway show a temporary speed limit. Until when does this lower limit apply?

  • Only for the next 100 metres
  • Until you have overtaken one vehicle
  • Until you pass a signal that is not flashing, or one showing 'End' or the national speed limit
    Correct
  • Until you change lanes

Why?

The lower limit stays in force while the danger lasts. Rule 257 of The Highway Code says to adjust your speed to the temporary limit shown by the flashing amber signals and keep to it until you pass a signal that is not flashing, or one showing 'End' or the national speed limit, and you are sure it is safe.
