Other types of vehicle

On the hard shoulder you see a recovery vehicle with a flashing amber beacon. What should you do?

  • Stop behind it and offer help
  • Treat it like an ambulance and pull over
  • Slow down and give it plenty of room as you pass
    Correct
  • Ignore it, as amber beacons mean nothing

Why?

Rule 225 of The Highway Code says a flashing amber beacon marks a slow-moving or stationary vehicle such as a recovery truck. It warns you to approach with caution, so ease off and leave extra space as you pass.
