Road and traffic signs

Double white lines run down the road and the line nearest you is broken. What may you do?

  • Nothing — you may never cross double white lines
  • Stop and wait on the line
  • Cross to overtake if it is safe to do so
    Correct
  • Use the other side as an extra lane at any time

Why?

When the line nearest to you is broken, rule 128 of The Highway Code lets you cross the lines to overtake, provided it is safe and you can finish the move before the line on your side becomes solid. White arrows on the road tell you to return to your own side.
