Road and traffic signs

You are waiting to join a major road and see double broken white lines across your lane. What must you do?

  • Stop completely, as you would at a stop line
  • Speed up to merge quickly
  • You have priority, so drive straight on
  • Give way to traffic on the major road
    Correct

Why?

Double broken white lines across your lane are give-way lines. Rule 172 of The Highway Code says you must give way to traffic already on the major road; you need not stop if the road is clear, but you must be ready to. A single solid line, by contrast, means a full stop.
