Road and traffic signs
What does this sign mean?
- The minimum speed is 50 mph
- There is a 50-tonne weight limit
- The maximum speed you may drive is 50 mphCorrect
- The national speed limit applies
Why?
A red ring around a number is a prohibition, so the number is the maximum speed you must not go above — here 50 mph. Councils often set 50 mph limits on faster roads that still need some restriction. Rule 109 of The Highway Code says you must obey signs giving orders.
