Road and traffic signs

No overtaking

While this sign's restriction is in force, what must you not do?

  • Sound your horn
  • Begin to overtake the vehicle in front
    Correct
  • Change into a lower gear
  • Drive above 30 mph

Why?

This red-ringed circle is a prohibition on overtaking. You must not begin to overtake the moving vehicle ahead until you pass a sign showing the restriction has ended. It is placed where overtaking would be dangerous. Rule 109 of The Highway Code says you must obey signs giving orders.
