Road and traffic signs

After double white lines, you see white arrows painted on the road pointing left. What are they telling you?

  • Turn left at the next junction
  • Overtaking is now allowed
  • Move back to your own side of the road
    Correct
  • A one-way street begins

Why?

Where double white lines are used, white arrows on the road guide you back to your own side before the solid line begins on your side. Rule 128 of The Highway Code explains that these arrows tell you to return to the left. Do not begin overtaking when you see them.
