Road and traffic signs

At traffic lights, the red and amber lights show together. What does this signal mean?

  • Go, if the way is clear
  • The lights are faulty
  • Stop only if a vehicle is coming
  • Stop, and do not go until the green light shows
    Correct

Why?

Red and amber together still means stop. Rule 109 of The Highway Code says you must not pass through or start until the green light shows. It appears just before green to let you get ready, but you must not move off yet.
