Road and traffic signs

A uniformed traffic officer on a motorway signals you to pull over. Do you have to obey?

  • Yes — you must stop as soon as it is safe
    Correct
  • No, only the police can stop you
  • Only if you were speeding
  • Only on an 'A' road, never a motorway

Why?

Traffic officers in uniform have powers to stop vehicles on most motorways and some 'A' roads. Rule 108 of The Highway Code says that when they signal you to stop, you must pull over as soon as it is safe. Rule 105 says you must obey their signals just as you obey the police.

Highway Code rules 108, 105
