Road and traffic signs

A police officer directing traffic signals you to stop. What must you do?

  • Carry on if the road looks clear
  • Wait for the driver behind to stop first
  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so
    Correct
  • Only stop if the traffic lights are also red

Why?

Rule 105 of The Highway Code says you must obey signals given by police officers. If they signal you to stop, rule 106 says you must pull over and stop as soon as it is safe. Their instructions override the normal flow of traffic and the traffic lights.

Highway Code rules 105, 106
