Rules of the road

You are turning right into a side road but a vehicle is coming towards you. What should you do?

  • Cut across quickly in front of it
  • Wait for a safe gap and do not cut the corner
    Correct
  • Sound your horn and turn anyway
  • Straddle the centre line and edge round

Why?

Rule 180 of The Highway Code says to wait until there is a safe gap between you and any oncoming vehicle, watch for cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians, check your mirrors and blind spot, then turn without cutting the corner.
