Rules of the road

On a roundabout you see a cyclist and a long lorry both keeping to the left-hand lane. Why might they do this?

  • They may keep to the left lane even when going right round
    Correct
  • They are not allowed in the right-hand lane at all
  • They have taken the wrong lane by mistake
  • They must always leave at the first exit

Why?

Rules 186 and 187 of The Highway Code say to watch for cyclists, horse riders and long vehicles on roundabouts. They may keep to the left lane, or take a different course, even when continuing right round, so give them plenty of room.
